Ashoka Astami is celebrated in the month of Chaitra on Shukla Ashtami (eighth day of the bright fortnight). In Tretya Yuga, during the Vanavasa time Lord Rama visited Ekamra Ksetra. Sri Lingaraja received him as a guest and requested him to spend some time. The place where Lord Rama stayed is known as Rameswara. Lord Rama’s birthday fell during the period of stay in Ekamra Ksetra. Sri Lingaraja went along with Devi Parvati, Ganesha and Kartikeya on his Ratha (Chariot) to Rameswara Temple to wish Lord Rama and this festival is celebrated till day in the name of Ratha Yatra of Sri Lingaraja. This is also famous as Rukuna Ratha Yatra or Ashokastami Yatra. The chariot is named as Rukuna Rath also it's called 'Analeuta' rath as the chariot does not take any turn during the return journey.
